“Superwomen: Who Elevated Chicago” honors the Black women whose courage, creativity, and determination helped shape a city that did not always recognize their worth. Their achievements created possibilities for generations, often at great personal cost.
The work explores the tension between celebrating Black women’s strength and expecting it without limit. Calling them “superwomen” can honor their resilience, but it can also obscure their vulnerability, exhaustion, and need for support. What does it cost to keep rising while carrying the weight of racism, sexism, and the expectation to remain unbreakable?
This work is both a tribute and a questioning of that burden. It invites viewers to recognize the women who made progress possible while seeing their humanity beyond their accomplishments. Their legacy calls for a future where Black women’s worth is not measured by how much they can endure.
